- Survival means staying alive. It might seem like a pretty easy thing to do with all the modern man-made resources at our disposal, but it can become a real challenge when most, if not all of those things are absent. There are countless scenarios which could leave a person simply trying to remain alive and well; one might think that being alone in such a scenario would be more beneficial than having the extra burden of helping and caring for family or friends, or even strangers, but that doesn’t have a chance of holding true if he/she lacks the skills, knowledge, and will power needed for survival.
- Think of survival as a three-story building with the foundation being your will to survive. The first level consists of your knowledge; this is essential to maintain confidence and a positive attitude. The second level is training; knowledge without training won’t allow you to better your odds in surviving. By practicing what you learn, you will gain the skills and experience needed to steer you towards the goal of staying alive. Finally, the third level is your kit or survival equipment pack. With the right items, coupled with knowledge and skills you will be able to self-rescue or survive long enough to be rescued, but most importantly, you will be adequately prepared to aid yourself and others in the art of survival.
- When thinking of survival as a three-story building, climbing to the top of that building will give you a vantage point of what lies ahead; similarly, by being on top of one of the highest peaks around you, you can see for miles and miles and plan according to your needs based on what your see (water sources, roads or paths, dense vegetation, flat terrain, cliffs, etc...), as demonstrated in the pictures below.
During the last five years, I've made hundreds of buddy burners. I've experimented and tinkered with different materials and construction processes, and have fine-tuned everything to produce the most uniform, consistent, and efficient buddy burners. I produce five different sizes/types of buddy burners and supplement those with hand-made fire starters that burn for a relatively long time, considering their size. I refer to the buddy burners and the fire starters as the 'Buddy Family' because they share the same survival properties and are, for the most part, made of the same materials. The different buddy burners are as follows:
As you guessed, the numbers at the beginning of each buddy burner name indicate the approximate burn time. With the exception of the 3-Hour Eco-Friendly Buddy Burner, all buddy burners are made with tin cans that have a screw-on lid. The buddy burner is a practical outdoor survival component. It is compact, light-weight, easy to use. I recommend keeping a buddy burner or two anywhere you might need emergency heat/fire; for example, in your hiking pack, snow-mobile, bug out bag, camping equipment, 72-hr. kit, or garage.
Now that I've covered the buddy burners, I will explain a little bit about the other half of the Buddy Family, the hand-made fire starters. As with the buddy burners, I make five different types of fire starters; they range in burn time from 10-30 minutes and each weigh in at under an ounce. Here is a list of the fire starters:
The fire starters are either self-igniting, or can be lit with nothing more than a good spark; I designed them that way so a person does not have to be reliant on matches or a lighter. I also wanted them to have a long burn time in case one needs to forage for firewood, or needs time to get the kindling lit. Also, the buddy matches are made to be held as they slowly burn, in case multiple fires need to be lit, or the same fire at different spots. Preparing for an outdoor survival situation does not have to be expensive or daunting. The Buddy Family represents one of the most basic survival components, fire; with it, you can do so many things to ensure safety and health when spending time in the Great Outdoors. Buddy-Burner.com is your 'buddy' in basic outdoor survival.
"You can lead a man outdoors, but you can't make him survive" - the Buddy Burner Builder
As the weather slowly starts to warm, and favorite destinations start to thaw out, one of America's favorite past times will again begin to create unforgettable experiences and lasting memories for families and individuals alike. Camping is something many of us just cannot live without. Something about getting away from it all seems to relax the soul and put the mind at ease. Now, that's not to say that planning a successful camping trip involves minimal work and preparation, but not much can surpass the feeling of being at one with our beautiful planet, Earth.
For me, as a husband and father, I've tried to reduce the amount of 'stuff' and preparation time we take when going camping, but with my wife and two daughters, some comforts still have to be there; I consider one of those comforts the buddy burner. Ever since I started making and selling buddy burners, and learning one valuable lesson along the way, I now always take a few of them with me when planning a date with the Great Outdoors. To be able to have a strong, long-lasting fire right away is something myself, family members, and many others have really come to appreciate. Not long ago, I received feedback from one of my customers stating: "Second order! Love these for backpacking. A great option for a fire." Weighing in at two and a half ounces up to almost nine, the different sizes of buddy burners I offer are a great quick fix for getting a last minute fire going. I remember one of the trips we took right outside Goblin Valley State Park in a primitive camping area....my brother and I had to use one of our jackets to bundle up a bunch of flash flood drift wood we found in a slot canyon and then hike it back about two miles to camp as it was getting dark, all so we could have a campfire that night; the only alternative was occasional live sage brush here and there. It was our first trip ever down in that area, but I was kicking myself afterwards for not having brought a few buddy burners just in case. They would have really made all the difference...and since then, they have. There have been many instances where our fun has outlasted the daylight and the buddy burner has come into play.
To order one or more buddy burners, check out my Survival Store. In the meantime, enjoy a couple of shots from our trip to Goblin Valley, and as far as Outdoor Survival goes, "Never give up and never surrender!".
Remember to plan/cancel outdoor activities as the weather permits. Even in an urbanized area, becoming stranded in bad weather could be detrimental to your health and/or ability to survive. The widget below is great for checking you local, travel, and destination forecasts for the next few days. Whether you're planning a long camping trip, or commuting down a busy highway, take the appropriate clothing and supplies to accommodate you in case of emergency. Cars will break down, and technology will fail, but being prepared in any type of weather will keep you calm and better able to work things out in a surprise situation.
Out of all the things one might think to have in his or her survival kit or 72-hour kit, what would you say is the most important? Personally, I would say that the one thing that would prove to be most beneficial in one's survival kit would be a means to produce heat. There are few populated places on earth that would allow someone to survive without having some sort of heat source, at least during certain times of the year; this is, of course, assuming that you are without the luxuries of natural gas and/or electricity. Buddy-Burner.com focuses on some of the more primitive basic ways to produce heat. In the worst emergency, we would have to assume that all of our technological devices would be of no use.
The question is, then, would you be able to sustain yourself and your family with what you currently have? Whether it's a zombie apocalypse or the detonation of an electromagnetic pulse, you will definitely want to be prepared. Heat is something our species needs to stay alive. For us, the two most important uses of heat are: first, to maintain our body temperature; and secondly, to cook raw food. Buddy-Burner.com was primarily created to provide this important component to include in your survival kit. Buddy Burners provide two to three hours of heat and light. They can be used to cook with, or can be used in cold weather to maintain body temperature. They store well, while maintaining functionality. They are compact and can be taken with you anywhere. Buddy Burners can be used while camping, fishing, hunting, hiking, snowmobiling, skiing, or just as a family activity. You can buy buddy burners from Buddy-Burner.com or visit my eBay Store: 'Buddy Burner Bunker'.
As always, I welcome any comments, suggestions, or questions you may have. Remember, "You can lead a man to the outdoors, but you can't make him survive" - The Buddy Burner Builder"
Once again Mother Nature strikes hard; millions of people are and will be affected by Hurricane Isaac. The question is....are they ready? Having some sort of basic Emergency Preparedness Kit is essential in the disastrous times in which we live. One of the most important components to any Emergency Kit is a source of heat. The Buddy Burner burns for about two hours and gives off plenty of heat for warmth and is a great source of light in the darkness. Also, if needed, it can be used to cook with. The Buddy Burner at Buddy-Burner.com is made of soy wax and cardboard neatly arranged inside a tin can with a lid; it can be stored almost anywhere, and certainly comes in handy in emergencies. It can be used while camping, or taken with you while enjoying some of your outdoor hobbies: Fishing, Snowmobiling, Skiing, Hunting, Hiking, Scouting....all these outdoor sports have potential to become an emergency situation. The question again: are you ready? Whether you find your emergency preparedness items at Buddy-Burner.com, or somewhere else, I encourage you to get some sort of emergency kit put together. Thanks for reading this post; as always, questions, suggestions, and comments are always welcome.
